The first domestic MW-scale microgrid system joining Taipower demand response program to provide ancillary services

Published:2025-12-03  11:06

【Technology Introduction】
As a large amount of intermittent renewable energy feeds into the grid, the associated power dispatch will become more complicate, and the reliability of electricity will also be significantly impacted. The microgrid can provide ancillary services to the distribution network in balancing power supply and demand, and maintaining power stability. Therefore, NARI studies power ancillary service strategies applicable for the microgrid, and verifies them in the first domestic MW-scale microgrid comprising 100kW PV, three 65kW micro-turbines, a 750kW diesel generator, a 750kW battery energy storage system as well as a 250kW hybrid active/reactive power regulation system. By means of numerous successful executions in reality, it shows that the microgrid can integrate renewable energy into a flexible power entity.

Through the developed energy distribution technique, the power generated by distributed energy resources within the MW-scale microgrid can be integrated according to their characteristics of power response and operation duration. As well, NARI cooperated with Taipower dispatch center to fulfill provision of 3 ancillary services by demand response,   which include spinning, supplementary and frequency regulation reserves.

Compared to the traditional power plants with uni-generation set, the microgrid effectively integrates distributed generation within 3 minutes as receiving dispatching demand, and output active power above 1MW (about 33% of INER’s peak loads) at least for 2 hours. In addition, the NARI’s microgrid is the first MW-scale microgrid system and certified by the energy trading platform of Taipower.

【Project Planning/Technical Applications】
The fluctuation of frequency and voltage on power grid has gradually emerged due to the large amount of intermittent power generation. The establishment of Taipower’s Energy Trading Platform has promoted power producers including traditional power production, storage energy, and aggregation agents to invest various power resources to help stabilize the power grid. NARI has developed the first domestic MW-scale microgrid system, which can provide spinning, supplementary and frequency regulation reserves by demand response. To expand the R&D results associated with energy distribution techniques of microgrid, NARI also provides technical consultation, technology transfer and technical services.

【Future Deployment】
With the liberalization of the power market, power companies require the external generation resources to stabilize the utility grid. Microgrid can provide new solution by aggregating a variety of distributed power sources to provide ancillary services. Therefore, NARI has developed the first domestic MW-scale microgrid system to fulfill provision of ancillary services by demand response. In the future, we still engage in the R&D of microgrid power control technology to help improve resilience of the utility grid.
