Nuclear Safety Guardian – Commercial Grade Items Dedication

Published:2024-10-30  10:03

【Technical Introduction】
The Commercial Grade Item Dedication (CGID) center provides technical evaluation for safety-related components in nuclear power plants and conducts dedication/testing services for class 1E electrical, instrumentation, control components, as well as ASME code mechanical components. It addresses the operational and maintenance requirements of domestic nuclear power plants, enhancing the timeliness and cost-effectiveness when those plants acquire components.

The CGID center consists of two laboratories: the CGID Laboratory and the Seismic Test Laboratory. The CGID Laboratory is responsible for conducting reception examinations, acceptance tests, material tests, non-destructive testing, and environmental qualifications. This includes radiation, aging, electromagnetic compatibility testing, temperature and humidity testing, for commercial grade items. The Seismic Test Laboratory is responsible for conducting seismic tests of components.

The shake table of the Seismic Test Laboratory is a Dependent Biaxial Shake Table System (DBSTS), featuring a 3 feet by 3 feet test platform and 8 vibration isolation air springs, hydraulic powered by 2 types of pressure pumps and providing the same vibration levels on both the horizontal and vertical directions with the actuator inclined at 45-degree. (As shown in Figure 1)

The Pulsar digital servo-control system offers digital control for motion simulation and test data process. To accommodate the seismic demands of nuclear power plant seismic margins, the actuator was upgraded with adding a 50 L accumulator in 2019, which has an operating peak displacement of 212 mm and is able to generate peak velocities of 2.12 m/s in both horizontal and vertical directions, the DBSTS upgraded performance under 500 kg payload condition. (As shown in Figure 2)

【Project Planning/Technical Application】
The CGID Center has completed a total of 172 cases of dedicated services for safety-related mechanical, electrical, and electronic components in nuclear power plants, including motors, valves, circuit breakers, printed circuit boards, etc. This ensures the safe operation of nuclear power plants. Additionally, through collaborative efforts between industry and research, the center has achieved the first domestic case of dedication for a safety-grade digital radiation detection system. This system has been successfully applied to enhance the safety systems in nuclear power plants. (As shown in Figure 3)

【Future Development】
The CGID Center, with extensive testing experience and a robust quality assurance system over the past several years, will extend its application to space radiation verification, aiming to maximize its effectiveness. The Seismic Test Laboratory is a professionally certified testing laboratory accredited by the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF). In addition to conducting seismic qualification for nuclear power plants, it can also be applied to seismic testing of communication equipment, ensuring that communication products meet the international NEBS GR-63-CORE Zone 4 seismic testing requirements.
