Development and Application of NARI-LRW-C3 Low-level Radioactive Waste Container

【Technical Introduction】
National Atomic Research Institute (NARI) developed INER-LRW-C1 and INER-LRW-C2 low-level radioactive waste (LLW) containers (C1 container and C2 container) to achieve the goal of efficiently and economically store LLWs produced during nuclear facility decommissioning. Furthermore, C1 container has not only been used for storing the dismantling wastes of Taiwan Research Reactor (TRR) but also been adopted by Taipower Company (TPC). However, a large portion of the internal space of C1 container cannot be utilized due to its design weight limit. Such inefficient utilization of container space increases not only the cost of container procurement but also the additional effort required for segmenting wastes into smaller pieces. C1 container is good in waste storage applications, but redeeming this disadvantage could reduce not only the cost on container procurement but also the exposure dose of the on-site working personnel. Because of these attractive benefits, NARI decided to develop a new container based on the exterior dimensions and features of C1 container but with 35% more design waste weight storage capacity. This new container was formally named NARI-LRW-C3 LLW container (C3 container), and its usage permit was granted on October 27th 2025. The prototype and specifications of C3 container are shown in Figure 1 and Table1 respectively. In the near future, C3 container will replace C1 container to store the dismantling wastes of TRR reactor vessel and be promoted to TPC for further storage applications.

【Project Planning/Technical Applications】
C3 container was granted usage permit in October 2025. Comparing with its predecessor (C1 container), C3 container has 35% more design waste weight storage capacity. This promotion not only reduces the cost on procuring containers but also increases the operation safety and efficiency. C3 container has been planned to replace C1 container to store the dismantling wastes of TRR reactor vessel
 
【Future Development】
NARI will follow the technology promotion experience of C1 container. Through technology transfer, NARI will collaborate local vendors to explore the LLW container market in Taiwan and will diligently accomplish the goal of LLW container localization.
